The Good Stuff – London Ranch

In this episode of The Good Stuff presented by the Sonoma County Winegrowers, hosts Virginie Boone and Karissa Kruse talk with Brian Shepard, Steward of Jack London Ranch (And part of a Century Club farming family in Sonoma Valley).

    About Brian Shepard

Brian was raised on Jack London Ranch and lived there until he graduated from Sonoma Valley High School in 1973. He helped plant the first vines on the Ranch in the summer of 1973. After high school, Brian enlisted in the US Army in the fall of 1973 and spent most of three years in Germany in service.

After the service, he did odd jobs on the ranch, returning to Europe for a year before returning to the Ranch in 1980 to plant another 40 acres while attending Santa Rosa Junior College Viticulture program. He graduated in 1984, left the ranch and spent the next few years working on vineyards in Sonoma and Napa.

Brian worked for Andy Beckstoffer in Napa from 1985-1989. In 1989 I went to work for Walsh Vineyards Management where he eventually became an owner. Through the years at Walsh, Brian continued to advise his father and his two sisters as they ran the vineyard.

He retired from Walsh in 2021 and continues to manage the Ranch with son Nicholas and a vineyard management company doing the day to day operations

    About Jack London Ranch

In 1905 Jack London, his sister Eliza Shepard and wife Charmian, began farming using organic and biodynamic farming methods, early examples of innovative techniques that included green manures, crop rotation, controlled animal grazing and many more cutting-edge practices.

In the over 100 years of Shepard family faithful and loving stewardship, the ranch has transitioned to a state park, cattle ranch, an award-winning dairy and finally, in 1973 Milo Shepard planted the first 30 acres of what would become 130 acres of Cabernet, Merlot, Zinfandel and Syrah grapes. The great and great-great grand-nephews Brian, Steve, Neil, Mike, Nicolas, and Josef continue to work directly with the land while the rest of the family enjoy, love and support this wondrous and peerless ranch.

And finally, Virginie and Karissa share their Tuesday Night wine picks!
