The Good Stuff – Quivira Vineyards
In this episode of The Good Stuff presented by the Sonoma County Winegrowers, hosts Virginie Boone and Karissa Kruse talk to Aaron Piotter, Winemaker at Quivira Vineyards.
About Aaron Piotter:
"Born and raised in the town of Sonoma. Father was a wine distributor and is now a vineyard manager. Mother was an educator, school board trustee, high school principal and now in retirement runs FISH (Friends in Sonoma Helping). They were Alcaldes and we have a key to the city on a plaque in their home near General Vallejo’s home.
I was the boy in the bubble growing up. Allergic to nuts, dairy, eggs, feather pillows, cats, Christmas trees, you name it. To this day I have anaphylaxis to nuts and some legumes. I can smell Thai food a mile away and have survived off a heightened sensory perception. Makes for a great palate and not only a desire, but a defensive approach to analyzing aromatics and mouthfeel.
I also grew up admiring the Sonoma agricultural families. Didn’t hurt that my catcher throughout Little League was Steve Sangiacomo. Countless kids I grew up with were of families that fueled Sonoma’s industry. Medeiros, Sebastiani, Bundschu, Merritt, Sessions, etc.
Swam at Davis. Got my winemaking degree from Davis. Most importantly, met my wife Kristin there. She worked in the wine industry as a Brand Manager for Gloria Ferrer and Beringer and ran Harvest Boot Camp for Kendall-Jackson in 1997. She’s always been exceptional at running events and is now runs programs and events for the Windsor Chamber of Commerce.
My most formative experience was working the lunch shift as a bus boy at the “East Side Oyster Bar and Grill” (now Della Santinas) on the Plaza in Sonoma and then biking directly over to Sebastiani Winery to work the swing shift in the cellar. That was 32 vintages ago!
I am (I’m convinced) the only Carbon negative winemaker in Sonoma County. I bicycle commute to work and when I must drive, it’s electric. I run on pasta, burritos and sandwiches, not fossil fuel.
Lastly, I’ve worked at amazing, family run estates like Viansa, Ferrari-Carano and ZD wines, corporate wineries like Franciscan, as well as charming, small producers like Blue Rock. I’ve worked with legendary consultants like Michel Roland, Philippe Melka and Greg La Follette. I ran a custom crush facility for two years which took at least five years off my life. Finally, I get to work at an amazing estate, have a glorious bike commute away and most importantly get to make wines at a CCOF winery, Quivira. Excited to continue my journey focusing on conservation, preservation and the pursuit of delicious, vintage driven wines at an Estate that has made the commitment to be Organic and truly rise above the rest."
About Quivira Vineyards
Nestled in Dry Creek Valley, Quivira Vineyards is a 110-acre organic estate where sustainability, biodiversity, and exceptional winemaking come together. Founded in 1981 by Holly and Henry Wendt and carried forward by Pete and Terri Kight since 2006, Quivira is celebrated for its Zinfandel, Sauvignon Blanc, and Rhône varietals that reflect the character of its gravelly loam soils and cool microclimate. The estate’s dedication to stewardship runs deep—from restoring Wine Creek, a habitat for Coho salmon and Steelhead trout, to maintaining a thriving 150-year-old fig tree and over 100 raised garden beds producing organic heirloom crops. Through regenerative farming, thoughtful winemaking, and community partnerships with Sonoma County chefs and food programs, Quivira continues to nurture the land, its wines, and the people who share in its bounty.
And finally, Virginie and Karissa share their Tuesday Night wine picks!
At The Table – MFK Fisher Foundation
Host Clark Wolf talks with Alex Wright, VP of the MFK Fisher Foundation, about the launch of the new website, the newsletter, the writing contest and the "Last House" location.
