The Rincon Valley Union School District in Santa Rosa is facing an alarming $8.5 million budget deficit.
The Press Democrat reports Superintendent Mike Herfurth told the school board that the district must cut over $4 million by June 2026 due to declining enrollment and rising costs. To save money, the district is considering two major steps: Closing at least one school, and significant staff layoffs to be announced this spring.
The district intends to make a decision on potential school closures by early January.
